5 Ways to Get Your Troop Enthused About Learning

|

Time to read 3 min

It can honestly be a bit difficult to get kids excited about learning. Kids are stuck in school for close to eight hours a day, so it’s understandable that they’re going to have little-to-no interest in learning during their after-school activities. It can even be hard to get children to try new things as they are the type to not be interested in getting out of their comfort zone.

As a troop leader, what can you do about this? While it may depend on the age of your troop, it’s important to know and understand that you can indeed get your troop enthused about learning. Here are some helpful ways to do that!

Find interesting subjects

Since you’re in charge of building the future leaders of tomorrow, it’s important to find some interesting topics. Keep in mind that everyone in your troop is different. They’re all going to have their own likes and dislikes. So it’s best to try and find a balance in striking interests. But don’t be afraid to ask each member of your troop what their likes and dislikes are. This is going to be one of the best ways to find balance on how you can come up with interesting topics.

Go beyond what school teaches

One of the beauties of being in a troop would be the fact that these future leaders are going to have life- long memories of being in your troop. While that’s incredible, it still goes further than that thanks to the important life skills that can be taught. So why not utilize this? Why not ensure that they’re going to learn things that school simply won’t teach?

The environment is a great example, unfortunately, trash is destroying ecosystems so your troop can do a clean-up or other fun activities that involve helping out the environment. You’ll be teaching them how they can make a difference while also letting them know the importance of the environment.

Compliment them

Whatever activities you’re doing with your troops, make sure to always compliment them and be sincere about it. Those little phrases like “you’re doing great” can truly go a long way. So let your troop know that you’re proud of them, let them know that you acknowledge what they’re doing.

Don’t be afraid to teach the boring things

While school is known for teaching some boring topics, those topics are very important such as writing. While there are plenty of skills that need to be improved such as handwriting, it’s important that these are touch and the materials like this https://studentreasures.com/teachers-lounge/lesson-plans/second-grade/ are provided to the troop. While meetings should be fun and engaging, it’s also important as a leader to know that not everything that can be taught will be fun

Play some games

Something simple as a game can get your troop to learn while still having a good time. This can include board games as well. There are more than enough that can teach some of the important life skills. Maybe ask your troop for some fun suggestions or ask what other troop leaders may be doing.
