Staying Cool with Your Girl Scout Troop: 15 Fun Water Games!

Time to read 5 min

As the summer heat lingers here in my town, I've been brainstorming ways to keep our troops engaged and refreshed during our outdoor meetings. We all know how much the girls love a good water game, so I wanted to share 15 ideas that have been a hit with my troop (and a few I'm excited to try!).

Fill the Bottle Race (Sponge Squeeze)

  1. Set up buckets of water and empty water bottles for each girl.

  2. On "go," girls race to soak a sponge in the bucket and then squeeze the water into their bottle.

  3. First one to the fill line wins!

We've done this as individuals and as relay teams – both are super fun!

Water Balloon Piñata

  1. Hang water balloons from a tree branch or clothesline.

  2. Blindfold the girls and let them take turns swinging to break the balloons.

The anticipation (and the splash!) always gets them giggling.

Hot Potato Water Balloon

Just like the classic game, but with a water balloon!

  1. Have the girls sit or stand in a circle and quickly pass the balloon while music plays.

  2. When the music stops, whoever is holding the balloon has to pop it over their head. Be ready for shrieks of laughter!

Water Gun Freeze Tag

Fun twist on traditional tag.

  1. Players are "frozen" when tagged with a water gun and can only be unfrozen by a teammate spraying them with water.

This one gets everyone running and strategizing.

Ice-Cold Toes

  1. Fill a bucket with ice water and toss in small, waterproof objects (small toys, coins, etc.).

  2. Girls have to use only their toes to grab the objects and place them in a separate container.

It’s silly and surprisingly challenging!

Water Cup Walk

  1. Each girl fills a cup with water and places it on their head.

  2. They then have to walk a designated path without spilling.

  3.  If they spill, they have to start over.

  4. The first one to the finish line with most of their water intact wins. This is great for balance and focus.

Water Bottle Fill (Water Gun Aim)

  1. Collect some old soda bottles and cut holes in the front.

  2. Have the girls hold them.

  3. Then, divide into teams and have teammates use water guns to try to fill their teammates' bottles.

Dixie Cup Dump

This one is super simple but always a hit.

  1. Place a line of Dixie cups on a table, some filled with water and some empty.

  2.  Girls take turns choosing a cup without looking and dumping it over their head.

  3. If it's water, they're "out" (and wet!).

  4. Last dry kid wins.

Ping Pong Ball Race (Water Gun Power)

  1. Create a simple obstacle course on the ground.

  2. Each girl uses the stream from their water gun to propel a ping pong ball through the course.

  3. First one to get their ball through wins. This takes a little skill and a steady hand.

Toss the Water

  1. Have the girls pair up and give each pair a towel.

  2. One girl holds the towel open like a basket, and the other tosses a water balloon.

  3. They take a step back after each successful catch, increasing the distance.

  4. The last pair to catch their balloon without it breaking wins.

Milk Jug Water Balloon Launch

This is a fun craft and game all in one!

  1. Using old, clean milk jugs, you and your girls can create their very own water balloon launchers.

  2. Just cut off the bottom of the jug, place a water balloon inside, and use the handle as a way to launch the balloon at a target or just for distance.

  3. It's a great way to talk about physics in a fun, hands-on way! As always, adult supervision is key for this one.

Slippery Watermelon Relay

  1. If you have a grassy area, lightly grease a watermelon with petroleum jelly.

  2. Divide the girls into teams and have them take turns trying to carry the slippery watermelon a certain distance and back to their team. It’s hilarious to watch!

Duck, Duck, Drench!

A water-filled twist on Duck, Duck, Goose.

  1. The person who is "it" walks around the circle tapping heads and saying "duck."

  2. When they choose someone to be "it," they say "drench!" and pour a cup of water on that person's head before running to take their spot.

  3. The drenched person then becomes "it."

Human Car Wash

  1. Have the girls stand in a line.

  2. Give some girls sponges and buckets of soapy water, and others sponges and water buckets.

  3. The girls with soapy water can "wash" the girls in line as they walk through, and the girls with water buckets can "rinse" them by splashing water.

Water Balloon Toss

A classic for a reason!

  1. Pair up the girls and give each pair a water balloon.

  2. Start close together and toss the balloon back and forth.

  3. After each successful toss, have the pairs take a step back.

  4. The last pair to keep their balloon intact wins.

Remember to always prioritize safety – supervise the girls closely, ensure they aren't running on slippery surfaces, and remind them not to aim water guns directly at faces.

I hope these ideas help you keep your Girl Scouts cool and having fun during these hot days! Let me know if you have any other great water game ideas to share!

This activity program was designed to fulfill the requirements for all 10 Daisy Petals and Promise Center or can be used by frontier girl leaders to earn similar badges.

The petal fairy program will take your girls on a garden adventure with their new petal fairy friends who need your girls help to plant their flowers, water their gardens, and in return the petal fairies will help your girls learn how to live by the 10 fairy laws one activity at a time.

Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
