|

Time to read 4 min

Sidewalk chalk is a fantastic and budget-friendly way to get creative outdoors! As leaders, we can use it for tons of engaging activities with our troop. Here are 12 ideas to get those imaginations flowing, drawing skills sharpened, and maybe even burn some energy!

Essentials for Sidewalk Chalk Fun:

Now, let's get chalking!

Our Troop's Awesome Sidewalk Chalk Adventures:

Giant Chalk Maze Challenge

Work together to create a HUGE maze that fills the driveway or a section of the parking lot!

Have different sections with twists, turns, and maybe even some fun dead ends.

Twist: Add little challenges inside the maze, like hopping on one foot or doing a silly walk between certain points.

Sidewalk Olympics

Draw out different "Olympic events" like a long jump line, hopscotch races, and even a target for beanbag throws and be sure to bring beanbags.

Twist: Decorate the  Olympic area with chalk "trophies" and cheering crowds!

Chalk Scavenger Hunt Adventure

Before our meeting, draw some simple pictures of things to find around the meeting spot (a specific type of leaf, a smooth rock, a yellow flower, etc.).

Give each girl a list and a chalk square to place her findings on as she discovers them.

Twist: The first one to find all the items and place them in their chalk square gets a special "explorer" sticker!

Collaborative Story Comic Strip

Draw out a series of 6-8 large boxes on the ground.

As a troop, brainstorm a fun story together, and each girl will take a turn illustrating a part of the story within one of the boxes, like a giant comic strip!

Twist: After we're done, we can "read" our comic strip aloud!

Simon Says Move

Draw a big circle (or a few squares) and divide them into colorful sections with our chalk.

Have someone be "Simon," and when I say, "Simon says stand on the blue!", everyone jumps to the blue section. If I just say "stand on the red!", don't move!

Twist: Let's make it a team challenge – if a few people make a mistake, the whole team has to do a fun (and quick!) silly action like 5 jumping jacks.

The Blind Sidewalk Chalk Artist Challenge

Pair up the girls and have one person have a simple object (like a pinecone or a small toy), and describe it to their partner, who will try to draw it with chalk without looking at the object!

Then we'll compare and see how close they got.

Twist: After the drawing, the "describer" can give their artist one "hint" to see if they can improve their drawing.

Exploding Chalk Paint

Before the meeting, prep some "exploding chalk paint bombs" using baking soda, vinegar, and powdered chalk.

Stand back and watch them erupt with color on the sidewalk!

Twist: See which color "explodes" the highest! (Safety first, we'll do this in an open area and stand a safe distance away).

Sidewalk Chalk Paint Creation

Try making your own sidewalk chalk paint.

Then, use brushes and rollers to create even bigger and more colorful masterpieces!

Twist: Have a theme for our chalk paint creations, like "Our Favorite Animals" or "Things We Love About Troop 1."

Floating Chalk Prints

Try the cool technique of making "floating" chalk prints on water! You will need a shallow container of water and some finely ground chalk.

Gently sprinkle the chalk on the surface and then dip paper or leaves to create unique designs.

Twist: Experiment with different colors of chalk and see how they mix on the water.

Lily Pad Hopscotch Adventure

Using the chalk, draw different-sized lily pads in a "pond" with chalk, spacing them out at varying distances.

Then, take turns hopping from pad to pad, trying not to fall into the "water"!

Twist: Add some challenges to the lily pads, like having to do a spin or clap hands before moving to the next one.

Collaborative Mural Masterpiece Art Swap

Draw several large squares or rectangles on the ground, one for each girl.

Set a timer, and everyone will start drawing in their square. When the timer goes off, rotate to the next square and continue drawing, adding to what the previous artist started!

Twist: Have a general theme for mural, like "Our Community" or "What Makes Us Happy."

Shadow Art Exploration

On a sunny day, pair up and take turns tracing each other's shadows on the sidewalk with chalk.

Then add details to the shadow portraits!

Later in the meeting go back and see how much the shadows had moved.

Twist: Take photos of shadow art to compare later!
