This adorable DIY thumbprint reindeer ornament is perfect for Girl Scout troops of all ages, from Daisies to Juniors! It’s easy, requires minimal supplies, and makes a wonderful personalized gift or troop keepsake.
Gather these simple materials before your troop meeting.
Small Paint Brush
Pen
Scissors
Craft Glue
Red marker
Black marker
Colorful cupcake holder or white cardboard
Optional: Baby wipes for immediate thumb cleanup
Follow these steps for a smooth crafting session with your troop and make this cute thumbprint reindeer
Step 1
First, take the paper cupcake holder and lay it over the red cardboard. If you don’t have a holder like mine you can draw a circle and cut some wavy edges.
Step 2
Draw the same shape of the holder, just bigger by around 1/2 inch.
Step 3
Take the paper cupcake holder and glue it over the red cardboard. If you don’t have a holder like mine, you can draw a circle and cut some wavy edges.
Step 4
Create a hole in the red cardstock using a hole punch.
Step 5
Thread a piece of satin ribbon or twine through the hole and tie the ends together in a knot. This creates the hanger!
Step 6
Apply a brown color to your thumb using a brush.
Step 7
Stamp it in the middle of the cupcake holder, and do this quickly, as you don’t want the color to dry on your finger. Leave the print to dry before you continue decorating.
Paint too thick? If the thumbprint is a big blob, add a tiny drop of water to your paint on the palette to thin it slightly.
Smudged print? If a print is smudged, just turn the cardstock over and start on the other side. Reassure the girls that mistakes are part of the fun of crafting!
Step 8
Draw some horns on top of the print with a black marker, also two black eyes and red nose.
Step 9
Below the reindeer, write something festive. I’ve written Merry Christmas, but you can personalize this craft and write the name of the kid you are going to give this ornament to.
Alternative Ideas: Instead of a thumbprint, a fingerprint makes a smaller, younger reindeer! You could even use a different color print to make a snowman or Santa.

Turn this craft into a meaningful community service project.
Operation Ornament: Make a large batch of ornaments and donate them to a local nursing home, a hospital pediatric ward, or an armed services support group.
Holiday Cheer: Instead of writing their own names, have the girls write short, encouraging messages on the back, such as "Sending Joy!" or "Happy Holidays from Troop [Number]."
Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
