Over the years, as a leader, I have tried several different games using a parachute. I am always in search of great "moving fun" activities to break up the meeting. When I came across a parachute online, I knew I had to get a few to use at my meetings. It was honestly the best decision a leader can make, no matter what level you have.
I’ve had everything from Daisies to Ambassadors, and every single level has gotten a huge laugh from playing these. Sometimes we end up spending half our meeting just playing games, but you know what? The girls are having fun, working together, and getting exercise, so it is always worth it.
Today, I want to share my top 10 favorite games we have played with our girls. If you don't have one yet, grab a 12-foot parachute and get ready for some chaos and giggles!
Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It
This is a perfect icebreaker to get the girls in sync with the rhythm of the chute.
When the parachute goes up, stamp your feet! When the parachute is high, reaching up into the sky, When the parachute goes up, stamp your feet!
Since it follows a familiar tune, you can keep the energy going with endless verses. Try "Nod your head," "Wiggle your hips," "Shout hooray," or "Turn around." It’s a great way to practice lifting the chute together before moving into the more active games.
Begin with all the girls spread around the parachute, holding the handles and stretching it out. Once the parachute is fully lifted, call out the names of two girls. Those two girls must let go, run under the "canopy," and switch places before the parachute falls. The girls will have a blast trying to beat the falling fabric!
This is an interesting one—my older girls actually came up with it while we were cleaning the church yard where we hold our meetings. They were raking leaves and suggested we pile them into the parachute and throw them into the air.
It doesn’t have a "winner," and in the end, the girls had to start over with the raking, but they had a blast playing in between doing their service project. It turns "work" into a memory.
I recommend this one for Juniors and up; our little ones had a hard time figuring out the coordination. Have the girls sit along the edge of the parachute with their legs underneath. Then, one girl on one side leans backward while the girls on the other side lean forward, creating a see-saw motion.
You can also have them lean sideways to create a "wave" or circular motion around the ring. It takes a while for the girls to get the hang of it, but once they find the rhythm, it’s a great core workout!
This game can be played with a variety of items: beanbags, small balls, cotton balls, or anything else you want to make "pop." Have the girls shake the parachute as fast as they can to see how high they can make the items fly.
Pro-tip: If you have a large troop and two parachutes, you can play "Parachute Volleyball." Put a ball in the middle and see if one group can work together to "toss" the ball over to the other group's parachute.
You can use jump ropes or if you have actual rubber snacks which we did you put in center of parachute, everyone must hold parachute with two hands and never let go if you do your out. But goal is to shake the parachute to keep the snakes from biting(touching) you
This is a great game to help girls work as a team and practice communication. Try to keep a ball rolling along the very outer edge of the parachute in a continuous circle. As the ball comes toward you, you have to lower your edge; as it passes, you raise it back up. It is much more difficult than you think! My girls were so proud when they finally got it to go all the way around once without it falling off.
This one is always a crowd-pleaser. Every other girl takes off one of their shoes and tosses it into the middle, underneath the parachute. On the count of three, the group raises the parachute high. The girls who are missing a shoe have to scramble underneath to find theirs and get back to their spot before the chute falls back down on them.
Another great collaboration game. The girls all go underneath the parachute so it looks like a giant turtle shell. They have to work together to move the "turtle" to a chosen finish line without anyone popping out or losing the "shell." If you have two chutes, this makes for a hilarious relay race.
You can’t have a parachute meeting without a beach ball! Throw it in the middle and let the girls "shoot" it up into the air. We had some issues with the wind one day—every time they threw it up, the wind caught it and the girls ended up chasing the ball across the yard. It ended up being more of a cardio workout than we planned!
