We all love the colors of Fall. Along with the leaves changing we also have a number of acorns falling from the trees.
Fall is the perfect time to embrace the beauty of nature and get creative with crafts. Making an acorn necklace not only allows us to explore our artistic side, but it can also be turned into a service project. By collecting acorns and creating unique necklaces, we can spread joy and positivity to those around us. It's a wonderful way to celebrate the beauty of fall and bring a smile to someone's face. So, let's gather our acorns, let our imagination run wild, and create beautiful acorn necklaces while making a positive impact on our community!
Our troop decided to use a few of these acorns to make hanging acorn people to be handed out at a local nursing home to bring smile to their faces. The girls went on a hike and gathered acorns that were big enough to draw a face on and to give it some hair. Some acorns lose the tops when they fall from the trees the girls gathered those up as well so they could glue back on to give it a hat.
Today I want to share this very simple craft that the girls can make for themselves or choose to give it to someone as a gift or do what our girls did and turn it into a service Project.
The best part about this craft is that the supplies are minimal, and you can find most of them on a nature walk!
Acorns: Look for acorns of various sizes. Some with their caps still attached are great for giving your acorn people hats!
Markers: Permanent markers work best for drawing faces and details.
Glue: Tacky glue or a hot glue gun (with adult supervision) is perfect for securing the acorn caps and hair.
Yarn, Ribbon, or String: For the hair and for the necklace itself. Use a variety of colors and textures to make each acorn person unique.
This is the most fun part of the project! Make this a two-part event: take your girls on a hike and enjoy the outdoors. While walking, have them search for acorns that are big enough to draw a face on and give hair. This is also a great opportunity to discuss the importance of respecting nature. We always remind our girls to never pull an acorn off a tree—it must have already fallen to the ground. This simple rule teaches them the importance of leaving no trace while still enjoying the natural world.
Using your scraps of yarn or ribbon, you can create hair for your acorn people. Use a small dab of tacky glue to secure the hair to the top of the acorn. If you found any acorn caps that have come off, you can use those as little hats, gluing them back on top of the yarn hair. You can also use a longer ribbon as a hatband that is connected to a longer string for the necklace.
Using a permanent marker, add a face to your acorn. Encourage the girls to get creative with their designs! They can draw happy faces, silly faces, or even winking faces. This is a great chance for them to give their acorn person a unique personality.
Once the glue and markers have dried, your acorn necklace is ready! You can attach a loop of string or yarn to the top of the acorn cap to make it a necklace. For a finishing touch, you can even add a small ribbon bow.
While your girls can certainly make these necklaces for themselves or as gifts for family, a service project is a wonderful way to extend the activity. By giving these small, handmade acorn people to residents at a local nursing home, the girls learn the joy of giving back. They're not just creating a craft; they're creating a moment of happiness for someone else.
If your troop loves getting creative with fall themes, I've got three simple, fun pumpkin crafts that are perfect for a troop meeting or a special fall event. The best part? None of these are the typical jack-o'-lanterns, so they can be made early in the season and still be a beautiful decoration for the rest of November.
Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
