When your girls are in the 9th and 10th grade that also mean new drivers on the road. This is a great time to learn about how to care for a car. Learning about your car is very important, but can seem pretty boring. These activities in this post were made to make the car subject a fun Learning adventure for your girls.

Fun Car Care Activities

Get a handle on basic car maintenance

Leaders and parents donated their cars, and the girls learned all about driving safety, in addition to how to check fluid levels, how to change a tire, how to check tire pressure and change the oil.

Investigate Vehicle Safety Game

OH NO Vehicle is Breaking Down
First play a fun relay game to get girls moving around and having a little fun. Give each girl a number in her team, as each number represents a different action.
#1 Nervous Driver Three steps forward, 1 step back
#2 Broken steering wheel zig-zags
#3 Dead Battery gets pushed by #4
#4 Dead Battery pushes #3
#5 Flat tire runs dragging one leg
#6 Reverse runs backwards

Set up two sets of orange cones for a obstacle course, and use one paper steering wheel per team (paper plate). One girl from each team will run around the cones and back and pass their steering wheel onto the next person, first team that finished won. Be sure to have girls do the actions associated with their number above.

After playing game have a discussion with the girls about different issues that can happen with a vehicle, have leaders and parents share experiences they have had with different age cars, brands, explain recalls to girls, and answer any questions they may have about safety of a vehicle.

What’s in a Safety Kit?

Get a vehicle safety kit and go over everything in it. Maybe even have a drawing and let one of the girls win the kit. If your looking for a good one that is AAA approved here is one to checkout: AAA 42 Piece Emergency Road Assistance Kit

Driving – What do you Know?

You will want to get a copy of the permit guide for your state to use for these activities. Buy match box cars to use for this activity. Hook several poster boards together to create a game board race track. Pick questions from Driver’s Permit Guide. If the girls answered correctly they moved ahead, but if they missed, they had to go backwards one spot. Awards were given to the girls that made it to the finish line.

Kim’s Game – Emergency Kit

“Kim’s game” requires an emergency roadside kit and a good memory. First explain what every item in the kit is used for and how to use it. Then cover everything up, and have the girls write down everything in the kit, with bonus points if they could explain what it was for. The girl with the most points wins.

Divide girls into teams and give each girl a paper that has a steering wheel printed on it. Give each team a different fuel efficient vehicle and before meeting gather information about the vehicle for girls to through. If you have internet at location even better let the girls look up. Have girls fill the wheel with all the great features, and points to vehicle why would a person buy this car over any other. Then have each group share their findings. Use this wheel or google picture of steering wheel you will find a lot to choose from.

What do we do after your girls complete the activities?

Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader. Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.

Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
