Have you ever wondered what the science was behind style? It is time to explore this with your girls by teaching them the science behind makeup, perfume, fashion fabrics, and skin care products while earning the Science of Style Badge. If you have no idea where to start this post will take you through a number of ideas and activities.
The Science in Style Badge Activity Booklet allows your girls to takeover the meeting and learn how to make their own lip gloss, and edible face mask as well as learn about women fashion all the way back to 1920.
They will learn more about which fabrics are better to keep you warm while performing an experiment; throughout the booklet, you will also find additional games and activities to keep the girls moving and engaged through the process. With a step by step activities, you can’t ask for a easier way to run your meeting.
Things needed: Smells: perfume (up to you how many), some type of container to hold the smelly items, cotton balls
We know that the nose can identify a wide variety of smells. How sensitive is your sense of smell? Before meeting spray or rub smells onto cotton balls and put in containers – two containers of each smell. Give each girl one container and then take the matching containers and hide around room open. Girls must go around room smelling containers till they find the match to their smell. Also have them try to guess what all the smells are as they go around.
Unveil the physics behind fashion by organizing a series of mini physics experiments. Investigate the concepts of weight distribution in heels, the influence of fabric texture on clothing movement, or even the science behind static electricity and its impact on hairstyles. Combining fun and learning, your troop will grasp the science behind style.
Dive into the world of cosmetic chemistry and empower your troop to create their own natural beauty products. You can explore making lip balms, face masks, or body scrubs using ingredients such as essential oils, natural exfoliants, and plant-based extracts. Explore the scientific principles behind emulsions, pH levels, and the importance of preservatives in cosmetics.
Give a bunch of examples of clothes through the years, hair styles, and shoes and have girls put a timeline chart together 1920 1930 1940 so on and then have girls try to organize the fashion items where they below. Have them use the internet or fashion books to come up with the answers.
If preparing all that seems like a lot of work – check out the Science of Style activity booklet for Seniors. It has all the fashion items for the years figured out for you, a great list of fashion facts for each decade and a blank timeline for each girl to use to put these fashion items together on. All you need to do is print and cut out the examples prior to the meeting and your ready to go.
Have your troop members bring in old clothes or accessories they no longer wear. Encourage them to get creative and experiment with dyeing, painting, or even repurposing items to give them a trendy twist. Discuss the science behind colors, pigments, and fabric materials while spicing up their wardrobes.
Another great thing to look at is Women throughout history that have made a difference. Checkout this awesome book that has paper dolls of women throughout history. Girls could make a poster or put on a play using the paper dolls
Remember, these activities are designed to engage your girls in an interactive and educational manner while working towards earning the Senior Science of Style Badge. Have fun exploring the fascinating connections between science and fashion!
Well of course give them the Senior Science of Style badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader.
Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.
Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
