If you have 11th and 12th grade scouts they will enjoy learning more about photography.
Before taking pictures your girls should understand the basics of photography. If you are able to get a professional photographer to come to your meeting that would be great, but if you don’t have access to that one site that I have used for beginners not knowing anything about the basics of photography is Expert Photography Website. Enjoy the ideas below to have some fun with your photography.
Have your girls take turns taking pictures of each other doing action poses, or if you are Juliette girl and earning this badge on your own, you can set the camera on a tripod and set the timer on the camera to take your own pictures. Once the girls have the action shots have them print the pictures and cut them out around their bodies. They can then turn it into a bookmark by poking hole in top and add ribbon. Now girls will have a action bookmark to use when reading a book.
Give each girl a camera or do as group and go out on adventure finding things, people, places that are on a list and take pictures of them. I have done a few different scavenger hunts with my girls in the past check them both out:
Have your girls take pictures of something that is up close, making the object unrecognizable at first glance. The point of this is to see the world in a different way through photography. After the girls have taken the pictures have them guess what other peoples images are. The best pictures are always when you take ordinary everyday objects and put them out of context and make them unrecognizable except to the trained eye.
Another version of this is to do guess where this was taken, maybe street, city location in the city, specific town landmarks etc.
This activity will allow your girls to create a series of pictures about a certain theme. As a group come up with a theme such as signage, cold, new year resolutions, I love our city, etc. Then let the girls go crazy with that theme, taking pictures telling that themes story. You will find that many girls will come up with a different visual story about the same theme. You can have them print them, put in frames and have a photo gallery show.
Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader. Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.
I get asked a lot what other resources are out there on the internet for Leaders. I have done some digging over the years and have used many of the resources myself. I compiled a list of some great companies that sell patches, programs and also other bloggers offering amazing resources that may fit your needs even better than my site did. Checkout what I found.
Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
