Want a fun way to explore a new country with your group? Choosing a destination and diving into its people, geography, history, and culture is a fantastic way to learn.

Let's center your next event around Fiji, a tropical paradise with a warm, welcoming heart and a culture that stretches back thousands of years. I’ve gathered key facts about the islands, and beyond the basics, I've put together a collection of games, activities, and resources to make your learning session both fun and educational.

Learn About Fiji

This content is ideal for printing and use as a display or for sharing directly with your group. The games and activities below will bring these facts to life!

Did you know? The official name for Fiji is the Republic of Fiji. The country is world-famous for the "Bula Spirit"—a core cultural value of joy, hospitality, and genuine connection. "Bula" is the standard greeting, but it actually means "Life"!

Geography of Fiji:

  • Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of about 333 islands and over 500 smaller islets.
  • The two largest islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which hold about 75% of the land area.
  • The capital and largest city is Suva, located on the island of Viti Levu.
  • The terrain is a mix of volcanic mountains and coral reefs. The highest point is Mount Tomanivi, standing at 1,324 meters (4,341 feet).

Where are the people?

  • The population of Fiji is approximately 900,000.
  • It is a multi-cultural society primarily made up of iTaukei (indigenous Fijians) and Indo-Fijians (descendants of Indian laborers).
  • Fiji is known for its incredible literacy rate of over 99%.
  • Community is everything in Fiji; the concept of "Solesolevaki" means working together as a group for the common good of the village.

Nature and Conservation:

  • Fiji is known as the "Soft Coral Capital of the World" due to its vibrant underwater ecosystems.
  • The country is a leader in climate action, using "nature-based solutions" like planting mangroves and vetiver grass to protect its shorelines from rising sea levels.
  • Fiji has one UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Levuka Historical Port Town, which was the country's first colonial capital.

Government and Economy:

  • Fiji is a parliamentary republic. It gained independence from British rule on October 10, 1970 (celebrated annually as Fiji Day).
  • The official currency is the Fijian Dollar (FJD).
  • Major industries include tourism, sugar processing, and "Fiji Water"—one of the country's most famous exports.

Language and Culture:

  • Fiji has three official languages: Fijian, English, and Fiji Hindi.
  • Rugby is the national obsession! Fijians "live and breathe" the sport, and their national Sevens team is among the best in the world.
  • The Kava ceremony (Yaqona) is a central social ritual where a drink made from crushed pepper roots is shared to welcome guests and bond the community.

Food and Traditions:

  • A Lovo is a traditional feast where food (like taro, cassava, and fish) is wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in an underground earth oven.
  • The national dish is Kokoda, a refreshing raw fish salad marinated in lime juice and thick coconut cream.
  • Fijians are famous for the Meke, a traditional dance that tells stories of legends, history, and spirits through song and movement.

Fiji Group Games and Activities

Bringing a culture to life is best done through activities! Try one of these fun ideas at your next gathering.

Fiji Bingo Game

You may enjoy teaching your girls facts about Fiji while playing a game of bingo. In this bingo game, there are 24 different Fiji facts your girls will learn about while playing the game. When you draw a fact listed on the bingo cards, you can also tell your girls a little bit about what each of them means. After one game, play again and have the girls tell you what each fact means.

The Coconut Shell Craft

The coconut tree is known as the "Tree of Life" in Fiji because every part of it is used.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • A Coconut Shell: You can buy pre-cleaned halves at craft stores, or use a real coconut (adult supervision required to crack and clean it!).

  • Pony Beads: Colorful plastic or wooden beads.

  • Twine or Hemp Cord: To thread the beads.

  • School Glue or Tacky Glue: To secure the twine to the rim.

  • Sandpaper: To smooth the edges of the shell.

Step-by-Step Directions:

1. Prepare the Shell If using a natural shell, use sandpaper to smooth the rough outer fibers and the top rim. This creates a clean surface for the glue and prevents any scrapes on little hands.

2. Measure Your Twine Wrap a piece of twine around the circumference of the coconut rim to see how long it needs to be. Cut a piece about 2 inches longer than the rim so you have room to tie it off.

3. Pattern the Beads. Slide your pony beads onto the twine.

4. Secure the Bead Ring Once the twine is full of beads, tie the ends together tightly. Apply a thin line of Tacky Glue around the very top edge of the coconut shell. Press the bead ring into the glue and hold it for a minute to ensure it sticks.

5. Dry and Display Let the glue dry completely (about 1-2 hours). Your Bilo is now ready!

Veicaqe Moli (Orange Soccer)

This is a traditional Fijian game played in villages using whatever materials were available.

How to Play:
Divide your group into two teams. Instead of a soccer ball, use a large orange or grapefruit. The aim is to kick the fruit through the opposing team's goal posts, using whatever materials are available. It’s harder than it looks because the orange doesn't roll straight!

Design a "Bula" Welcome Banner

Fijian culture is all about making people feel like "Vuvale" (family).

Activity: Using large butcher paper, have the group design a welcome banner for a "village guest." They must include the word BULA in large letters and decorate the border with tropical motifs like hibiscus flowers, palm fronds, and sea turtles.

Kokoda (Fruit Style) "Cooking" Contest

Since raw fish might be tricky for a group setting, try a sweet version of Fiji’s national dish.

How to Play: Provide bowls of chopped tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, banana) and cans of coconut milk. Challenge teams to create the best "Sweet Kokoda" by mixing the fruit and cream. Award prizes for 'Best Presentation' and 'Most Tropical Taste.'
