If your looking for ideas to make your meeting more fun while learning how you can save someones life or treat minor injuries using first aid, you have come to the right place. Using some of these activities below your girls will explore every aspect of safety with some fun activities, and at the same time take it a step further and actually learn how they can save lives and be able to take action in a actual emergency.
Below are a few ideas to get you started.
Did you know? The earliest named doctors were women? The earliest recorded female doctor by name lived in approximately 2,700 BC in Egypt by the name of Merit Ptah. Some 200 years later, another female doctor, Peseshet, lived and what was scribed on her tomb was the title “overseer of female physicians.” That means there were a group of them! Girls were rocking it out and making a difference in early world history in health care!

Share with your girls different items that go into a First Aid Kit and then ask them to explain what they are used for. Here are 5 to get you started.

Sometimes medications are needed to help in emergency situations. People with known medical conditions will carry emergency medications to have available in the circumstance of needing them.
Share with your girls more about a few different medicines and discuss if anyone in troop or friends and families have to use these.
Epi Pen
An epinephrine autoinjector can also be called EpiPen. This is a medical device usually used to treat allergy emergencies. A person carries one of these injectors because their body has an intolerance to something like a food or bee sting. An allergic reaction could look like hives (bumps on the skin), itchy skin, scratchy throat, or having troubles breathing.
Inhaler
An inhaler or puffer is a piece of medical equipment used for getting medication into the lungs. It is used most commonly by people with asthma. Asthmas is a condition where the lungs suddenly constrict, or tighten, and feel like they can’t breathe. When a person with asthma feels an attack coming, you may see someone take a deep breath in from one of these inhalers/puffers and hold their breath. This gives the medication time to circulate in the lungs and absorb where needed to open up the airway.
Glucose Tablets
Glucose tablets are used in the evident of hypoglycemia. This is a condition that could happen to anyone if there is not enough sugar circulating in the blood stream. Glucose tablets can be used to help increase the amount of sugar quickly. Orange juice and hard candies can be used as well to help in this event. This could happen to anyone if they go a long period without eating.
What better way to help your girls understand what needs to go into a first aid kit then to play a game where they have to try to remember everything that goes into one. Give each girl a piece of paper and pencil. Lay out the items from the first aid kit in the middle of the group let them look at everything for 3 minutes. Then cover everything up. The girls then have 5 minutes to write down everything they can remember was on the table. Girl with the most items right wins. There are a lot of kits out there, but if you do a lot of camping with your girls check out this 303 piece first aid kit that is great for meeting spaces, camp outs, to use at home, to leave in the car.

Another resource that has always helped me in planning is Pinterest – I found some great ideas and added to a Junior First Aid Badge Pinterest boards that are specifically targeted toward learning more about first aid.
Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, date and troop leader. If you have a multi-level troop you may want to use one of the variations to this program that is geared toward the age of your girls.
