Democracy Activity Booklet for 2nd and 3rd Graders

This activity booklet was designed to fulfill the requirements for the Girl Scout Brownie Democracy badge, or can be used by Frontier Girl leaders to earn similar badges. Great for teachers and home-schooled kids as well.

This booklet will explore how local, state, and national government works through interactive play. Through fun games, creative crafts, and interactive worksheets, you will learn to discover the three branches of government, understand how citizens participate in local leadership, and practice fair voting through secret ballots. This booklet will help girls see how every voice matters when making fair decisions in their troop, family, and community.

Activities Include:

• Discover How Government Works – Explore how fair rules keep communities safe through a game of Rules & Roles Red Light, Green Light, a Government Branch Tree Craft, and a hands-on Troop Lawmaker Town Hall.
  
  
• Explore the Branches of Government – Learn how power is balanced among Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches using a fast Branch Relay Match, a Balance of Power Hanging Mobile, and a Community Leader Interview & Map.
  
  
• Learn How Voting Works – Practice secret and fair decision-making with The Secret Ballot Box Challenge, an "I Voted" Badge Craft, and a take-home Family Dinner & Activity Vote.
  
  
• Stand Up for What You Believe In – Practice expressing personal opinions and advocate for causes with the Opinion Corners Freeze Game, a Community Issues Poster Banner, and an Official Troop Opinion Petition.
  
  
• See How Laws Are Made – Follow the complete legislative journey of an idea with The Bill-to-Law Board Walk Relay, a Spinning Storybook Wheel, or a Troop Legislative Session.
