Designing Robots Activity Booklet | 4th - 5th Grade

This activity booklet was designed to fulfill the requirements for the Junior Designing Robots or can be used by frontier girl leaders to earn similar badges. Great for teachers and home schooled kids as well.

This activity booklet features completely unplugged, hands-on activities, games, and real-world challenges that teach girls how real robotic engineers design, blueprint, build, and test machines. Every single step includes three distinct options—a game, a hands-on activity, and a real-world activity—allowing leaders to mix and match the perfect, stress-free meeting without needing computers, expensive tech, or programming platforms.

Activities Include:

1. Discover Everyday Problems & Robot Solutions: Girls race in a chore relay, sketch custom robotic helpers for daily chores, and audit their meeting space for real-world automated devices.

2. Dream Up Your Robot's Superpower: Girls act out robotic roles in charades, build 3D paper bag puppets with specialized attachments, and run mock job interviews to pitch their robot's skills.

3. Blueprint Your Mechanical Buddy: Girls tackle a blindfolded building challenge, draft two-angle technical schematics with material specs, and map room dimensions to plan safe navigation paths.

4. Build Your Working Prototype: Girls sculpt quick tin-foil prototypes against the clock, construct full models from recycled household materials, and write step-by-step assembly guides.

5. Test, Troubleshoot, and Share: Girls navigate a glitch obstacle course, troubleshoot design flaws in a redesign log, and present their prototypes during a peer-review pitch showcase.
