I’ve been watching troop leaders navigate today's world, and sometimes, it feels like they’re trying to change a tire on a moving car. It's chaotic, a little insane, and you're amazed when anyone survives it. But the great leaders? They’ve mastered the art of adaptability. There’s a lot we can learn from what they’re doing right.
Great leaders have this near-instinctual ability to be flexible without sacrificing their core mission: empowering their teams to be confident, competent leaders. Like a willow in a hurricane, they bend and flex, but they don't break.
When priorities shift, technology changes how work gets done, or an overnight trend completely upends things, these leaders don’t panic. They pause, observe the new landscape, and find a way back on track. Their adaptability isn't reactive; it's proactive. They notice change early and enter it with purpose.
What sets resilient leaders apart is their openness to learn constantly. And not just official training; these leaders know that the business leadership skills we teach girls, like communication, decision-making, and creative problem-solving, are in constant flux. What worked five years ago may no longer work.
They're the ones drinking leadership blogs at the coffeehouse, cross-pollinating ideas with other troop leaders, and best of all, admitting I don't know when they should. Humility is a powerful thing. They ask their girls for feedback, try out new activities, and don't shrink back from failing forward.
Their adaptability isn't reactive; it's proactive. They notice change early and enter it with purpose.
The strongest leaders don't go it alone. They surround themselves with teams—co-leaders, volunteers, even promising younger talent—who thrive in the gray areas and get energized by change. These leaders create safe spaces to experiment, learn, and grow. They encourage curiosity and celebrate resilience, even when things don't go exactly as planned.
They understand that adaptability isn’t just a personal trait; it’s a culture. And it starts with empowering others to take initiative, share ideas, and lead in their own way.
Technology presents a unique challenge. Great leaders don't chase after every new program or platform, but they are curious. They explore new tools and digital solutions with cautious consideration. When a new technology can truly benefit their team, they’re ready to jump in. It’s not about being trendy; it's about being ready.
Most importantly, adaptable leaders never lose sight of the human element. Troop meetings may go virtual, and schedules may be shifted, but leadership is always people. Great leaders listen to their girls, not as data points, but as individuals with aspirations, questions, and voices that matter.
Being a great troop leader isn't about knowing all the answers. It's about being curious, being humble, and being sensitive to the people you're working with, while infusing flexibility into everything you do. And maybe just knowing that no matter how fast the world changes, things like integrity, kindness, and truly caring never fall out of style.
Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
