October is a special month for many reasons – crisp air, colorful leaves, and of course, Halloween! But it's also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we can come together to support a cause that touches so many lives. As Girl Scout leaders, we have a unique opportunity to connect this important awareness with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, who bravely battled breast cancer.
You might be wondering how to approach this sensitive topic with your troop, especially with girls of various age ranges. The good news is, there are many thoughtful and age-appropriate ways to honor Juliette and contribute to breast cancer awareness, all while embodying the Girl Scout spirit of courage, confidence, and character.
Here are some ideas for activities, crafts, and resources to make this October meaningful for your troop.
One powerful way to get involved is to participate in local breast cancer awareness events. Always remember to check with your Girl Scout council regarding any guidelines on fundraising for other non-profit organizations. National Girl Scouts generally does not allow fundraising for other non-profits, but there are many ways to support without directly raising money.
Relay for Life & Awareness Walks: Many troops find joy in helping at events like Relay for Life or local breast cancer awareness walks. Your troop could participate in an opening flag ceremony, help light luminaries (if allowed), or pass out free water to participants. These are wonderful ways to show support and be a visible part of the community effort.
For Older Girls (Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors): If your council approves, older girls could set up a table at an approved event. They can create informative posters for breast cancer awareness and gather pamphlets from local cancer organizations to share. Contact local breast awareness organizations or Relay for Life events in advance to get approval for setting up a table.
Face Painting Fun (All Ages): With council approval, consider setting up a face painting station at a Relay for Life event! Girls can paint pink ribbons, flowers, or other supportive designs on attendees. This is a joyful way to interact with the community, spread awareness, and bring smiles to faces.
Hope Rocks
This is a wonderful activity for girls of all ages! Have your troop paint rocks with words of "HOPE," "ENCOURAGEMENT," "STRENGTH," or other uplifting messages. Let the girls design their own.
You can then place these rocks on a table at an approved event for people to take, along with pamphlets. It's a small gesture that can bring a lot of comfort and inspiration..
Pink Pumpkins
A fun twist on a classic fall activity! Girls can decorate pumpkins with a pink theme to represent breast cancer awareness and honor Juliette. These can be displayed outside homes or at meeting places, a meaningful reminder throughout October. You can find inspiration and instructions for pink pumpkin decorating below.
Explaining breast cancer to your troop requires sensitivity and an understanding of varying age levels. It's highly recommended to communicate with parents beforehand to gauge their comfort level with the topic. For younger girls, simply focusing on support, kindness, and the color pink can go a long way. You can explain that pink represents courage and hope for people who are sick or who have survived illness, just like our founder, Juliette Gordon Low.
For older girls, you can discuss the importance of awareness and the impact of diseases like breast cancer, always keeping it age-appropriate and focusing on empathy and community support.
