One value every girl should possess is being considerate and caring to everyone. This post I will share with you a unique idea from a leader of troop 669, Danielle Roush who taught her girls to be Considerate and Caring by helping people in their community.
They made birthday bags for their local school food pantry. Each bag had enough items to throw a birthday party for the lucky recipient. We made one for each Scout in our troop to make sure someone using our school’s food pantry could have a birthday party.
How do you do this with your troop? Complete story from Troop 669…
“Our girls had a vote on what type of community service project that we wanted to take on with part of our sales from Fall Product. We discussed needs versus wants. For example, we talked about needing food, but you don’t necessarily need a party. We talked about how some families can’t afford to have parties, so they voted on making party bags for our school’s food pantry.
They voted on the type of items that we wanted to have in the party bags. We made a list and some of our Scouts were able to join us at the dollar store to buy most of the party supplies. We bought the cake mixes and frosting at a local grocery store. Our girls that went to the dollar store picked out the birthday banners, birthday candles, party plates/napkins, party noise makers, silly emoji pencils as a gift for the birthday kids, and balloons. The leaders picked up the cake mixes and frosting to bring to the Birthday Bag meeting.
We made 12 bags total to represent each of the girls in our troop. At our Birthday Bag Meeting, our girls sorted and packed each bag with all of the items to be donated to our school’s food pantry. Since we meet in our school for our meetings, each girl was able to deliver her bag to our school’s food pantry bin by the end of our meeting. Not only did our troop give back to our community, but they also earned a award.”

Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader. Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.
