10 Adorable Crafts to Create With Your Girl Scout Troop

Arts and crafts are one of the best parts of troop meetings, but they can be one of the hardest to make up by yourself!

If you are a scout leader who needs ideas for camp crafts or field trip activities, you’re in the right place. All you have to do is take a stop at the craft store or the dollar store to pick up your materials and have my tutorials in hand, and you’ll be ready to have creative fun together.

Wooden Spoon Mermaid

A great way to engage your scouts’ imagination is to create mythical creatures together and practice storytelling. This particular craft is perfect for first year scouts. It’s simple and beautiful. The mermaid’s glittery hair is even braided!

Toilet Paper Roll Elephant

Who doesn’t have extra toilet paper rolls lying around? Toilet paper animals are a great craft for animal lovers, and they don’t require any crazy craft supplies either. My personal favorite is the elephant, and I’ve found my scouts love it as well! With some paint or construction paper, googly eyes, and just a few more items, you’ll be well on your way to having a whole herd of elephants.

Milk Carton Birdhouse

Part of being a Girl Scout is learning to enhance our natural environment and show love to all living things. Creating birdhouses is an exciting activity for the whole troop that will encourage a love for nature in your scouts. Plus, it can become an ongoing activity. Your girls can spot birds at their feeders at home and compare what types they’ve seen.

Rainbow Wind Chime

Another way to beautify the great outdoors is to create homemade wind chimes! This cute troop activity is one that your students have probably never created before, and they will love the colorful addition to their porch or bedroom window.

String Art with Nails

String art is a fun craft that can be modified to suit younger or older troops, because it is very versatile. You can put the nails in any arrangement and use different colors of yarn to bring any shape or picture to life.

Melting Crayons

You may have seen melted crayon crafts on Pinterest or Facebook, but have you tried them on your own? I recommend creating some of your picture with black acrylic paint, then melting crayons to complete the picture. This craft is highly modifiable as well. Each individual girl can come up with their own ideas about how to use the melted crayons in their own creative way. It’s so much fun!

Tetrahedral Kite

Flying a kite is a fun activity that often gets overlooked now that digital hobbies have really exploded in popularity. One way to take it to the next level with older girls is to hand-make your own tetrahedral kites and take them to a local park to fly together.

Just make sure to keep an eye on the weather to ensure there will be enough wind on the day you decide to test out your kites! There’s nothing more defeating than trying to fly a kite without a strong wind.

Egg Carton Turtle

Another craft for animal lovers is egg carton turtles! If you have younger scouts, they will really enjoy this one. I mean, how can you go wrong with googly eyes and pom pom balls? While you’re creating your turtles, you can talk about the importance of reusing and recycling everyday items like egg cartons to save the environment.

Salt Art Flower

Sometimes science and art have some really fun crossovers! Salt art painting only takes a few easy steps, and your scouts will be delighted by it. I even have a tutorial video that will break down the process and help you feel prepared to teach all your scouts. Of course, you don’t have to create flowers. You can create any design with salt art! Let your girls’ creativity shine as they create their own salt art pictures.

Pine Cone Fairy

One more way to bring a sense of whimsy to your troop meetings is creating fairies together. If you go out on a nature hike together, encourage each scout to select a pine cone. They can choose a tiny pine cone or large pine cone, it doesn’t matter. Then, you can create adorable pine cone fairies together! For extra fun, create backstories to each fairy and watch them interact with each other, or talk about how the different fairies reflect your different scouts’ individuality and personality.

I hope these crafts can help you bond with your scouts and make for enjoyable memories together. My only warning is to make sure you have extra help if you need it from troop parents with hot glue guns, scissors, or any other potentially dangerous materials for young scouts. Other than that, just have fun!
