My girls have always enjoyed camping, most years we would go when its was to cold and raining outside and couldn’t enjoy the hiking trails. But when we have nice weather we take advantage of the trails.

I have done many different type of hikes in the past with girls so I also share different variations of hikes to take your girls on.

Hiking Theme Ideas

Humpy Dumpty Trail: Get a Humpy Dumpty picture and cut it up into 15 to 20 pieces and hide them along the hiking trail. You can form teams going down different trails or have the Humpy Dumpty pictures different colors on same trail. Girls will go down trail find the color of their Humpy Dumpty then at end put it together. First team to get together first wins.

Trust Hike: Take yarn and run around trees. Make sure area is safe for something like this. You will then blindfold each girl and have her find her way through maze just using yarn.

Twenty Questions: This is like the typical twenty question game. One person thinks of a person or a place; the others get 20 yes-or-no questions to guess what or who it is. You can do this while taking hike.

Hiking Scavenger Hunt: Instead of just hiking with no purpose, lets make it a scavenger hunt. This can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Before starting out make a list of items you want everyone to find on trail. Object of game is the first person to find everything wins. Make sure to explain to your girls you will not actually collect the objects, because you want to Leave no trace, but also you want to leave it better than you found it, so with that said put a piece of litter on your list – that would be something you would collect. Maybe sticks and deb-re on path – that could be cleaned up and moved off path. Complete a service project while taking a hike.

Ideas for hunt:

  • A yellow flower
  • A squirrel
  • Something red
  • Round rock
  • Piece of litter (Bring a bag to collect all litter found)
  • Something a human made
  • Use a Bingo Game Card: Outdoor Bingo Game

Trail Mix Making

Teach your girls how to make their own trail mix using a variety of nuts, dried fruits, and chocolate chips. Encourage them to create their own unique blends and discuss the importance of having nutritious snacks while hiking.  The options are unlimited on what type of snacks to mix together.

New To Camping?

One of the best parts about being a Girl Scout is learning how to be independent and strong, and going camping is a great way to do that. But if your a new Leader or you just don’t camp often there are some important safety things to think about with fire, putting up a tent, and what to bring I found a great starter guide for beginners you will want to check out. When your girls go camping, they learn how to be resourceful and self-reliant in a whole new way. Take a look at this camping guide from Personal Creations. It shows you how to pitch a tent, build a fire, and go fishing all with your own two hands. How empowering! Check it out before your next camping trip.

What do we do after your girls complete the activities?

Well of course give them the Brownie Hiking Badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader.

Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.

Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
